Learning Beyond the Classroom

ABOUT ME

I tutor face-to-face or online

I am a qualified Primary teacher, with special training in dyslexia, autism and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and a PhD in education. With over 20 years of experience as a tutor, I recognize the potential in each one of my students. With my person-centred, customizable approach, my students have enjoyed their lessons, and their classroom performance in reading, writing and maths improved, and as their confidence increased they learned to be independent.

I am qualified to identify dyslexia and design learning programmes. I am registered with Dyslexia Scotland, as a private tutor and have a full GTC Associate Primary teacher registration.

I live in East Lothian, Scotland.

Testimonials

"Kris has made a huge difference to our lives. We were struggling as parents seeing our son feel like a failure in most things he did at school. He didn’t get his diagnosed of dyslexia until p5. He couldn’t understand how others could do things so easily when he found it so hard. His confidence was rock bottom. Kris has helped him believe in himself. She has given him the confidence and tools to achieve, you hear them laughing each session. We can’t thank Kris enough."

“B has moderate to severe dyslexia and had been in tears about his inability to move forward with English at school. He actually asked me to get him some help so I emailed Kris and then we chatted. She showed me some of the work her pupils had achieved and got published!

My son absolutely loves his weekly session with Kris, he actively seeks us to show us what he has done during it too. He has become a child who avoided and worried about the written word to one who has confidence in his ability. Additionally, his recent pupil report placed him way above his previous level and he is comfortably ready for high school.

I/we could not recommend Kris enough - she goes beyond normal tutoring, has vision and vocation and genuinely focuses and cares about the child. Kris is a true blessing.”

(My son) “struggles with concentration and has ADD, because of this he lacks confidence.

Kris has worked with (my son) on both English and Math, building his confidence with the way she teaches.  He enjoys the sessions, as they are fun and lead by him, rather than the traditional way of tutoring. He has even written a short story which was picked out and published in the ‘Young Writers’ book.  He would have never accomplished this without Kris’ support and encouragement.

I can see a massive difference in my son since he started with Kris.”

“Tutoring with Kris is helping our son massively. Our biggest test of this is the fact that he logs on to his online zoom calls with Kris weekly without any push back or moaning. Kris makes the tuition fun so he often doesn’t even realise he’s learning. Kris also gives E the power and decision over what he chooses to learn and then makes it fun. Result....he is bought in and engaged. The fact that Kris has a sharp sense of humour helps. I hear them laughing through the hour and it makes me smile.

“Our son was generally struggling with school, slower to catch on than his peers and lagging behind a wee bit. He needed to build his self confidence and self belief from someone other than his parents who can take time with him at his pace and rebuild his self esteem as an individual. Kris does this on every level and it’s been amazing to see his confidence grow.”

“We started working with Kris in lock down so have not known any difference in tutoring. Bearing in mind our son was 8 and severely dyslexic when he started, Kris made engaging online easy and fun. Now all we need do is set our son up online and then let him go. I think all kids have adapted to online learning through home-schooling which is great but even more so for children with dyslexia. I welcome the time when Kris can teach our son in person but until then it works great. Kris goes above and beyond with our son. Even in lockdown we have found ways to meet socially distanced mostly at Kris’s instigation, walks, quizzes etc. She’s just brilliant at her job and cares so much for the children she teaches. She goes above and beyond, publishing books with their work in. What 8 year old can say they’ve had their writing published, again brilliant fur self esteem. Kris has been amazing for E and  enabled us as parents to relax knowing the progress he makes with Kris will allow him to keep pace and find his own way.”

“Commenced one hour sessions 3 weeks ago with Kris. Initially very unhappy about diagnosis and about the prospect of engaging with anything associated. Tears beginning first session. Smiles by end of first session. Kris really put at ease and was honest and open about the content and direction.  Is now very happy to do the sessions and this week asked me if she could listen to audiobooks.  I nearly fell over as have been trying to get her to do that for years! I think the skills she is already learning will be great for transition to secondary school and beyond.

The zoom technology is working really well and not a barrier.”

“I initially contacted Kris to work with my son to improve his confidence with reading, writing, spelling ...English.  Following a recent diagnosis of dyslexia, I was keen to get advice supporting him the best I could with such.  My son does not have a positive view of the subject English and his confidence was rock bottom however with a very practical, fun and person-centred approach to learning, Kris is providing my son with a hugely more positive outlook and his confidence builds each week.  For example, after his lesson today where he produced a three-page word document, he was jumping on the bed and singing to himself....and for the first time ever, he wanted to return to this piece of work himself and finish it.  he took great pride.  There are no words to describe as a parent how this feels.  Kris also highlights my son's strengths which I'm most grateful for.   With regards to her professional relationship with my son, she connects on his level and engages him immediately, he always enjoys his session with Kris.  I have also learnt so much and feel so positive moving forward.  Thank you Kris - you are a super star and we are so grateful our paths have connected.
